Professional Teaching Philosophy

"In my classroom we learn together, we investigate, reflect on and solve real world problems, we have high expectations for learning and every child student is encouraged to believe they can make a difference in the world" - Jade Drieberg.

Teachers have the ability to positively influence a young persons life, this privilege should be honoured with a commitment to teach and assess learning in meaningful and rich ways, for every unique student, according to their needs and strengths and interests.(APST 1,2)

Underpinning my pedagogy, is my unwavering belief that my role as a teacher is to inspire and motivate students to reach their full potential to become lifelong learners. I will provide experiences that encourage higher order thinking, ignite student creativity, promote critical thinking and engage them in inquiry to develop curiosity and problem solving skills (APST 1, 2, 3).

My classroom environment and pedagogy reflect a constructivist view of learning where I strive to facilitate student learning through a rich collaborative environment and purposeful resources (APST 2). I utilise labelled praise and meaningful feedback to help students become intrinsically motivated and confident in their own abilities as a learner. As a 21st century teacher I will create innovative lessons that include the responsible use of ICT and hands-on learning materials. (APST 3, 4)

I aim to have a deep knowledge of curriculum content and know my students well, this will enable me to differentiate my teaching and learning experiences, using various teaching strategies, flexible delivery modes and to  teach curriculum content and assess learning according to the  many diverse learning needs and styles within my classroom. I will continue to seek use teachable moments across all key learning areas, including the explicit teaching of time management, organisation and independent learning strategies. (APST 2, 5)

I strongly believe in nurturing students health and wellbeing and recognise that every student brings a unique and special story to the world. Students will come from many and varied contexts with a diverse range of cultures, backgrounds, religions, genders, family structures and values. All students from their diverse backgrounds and their families belong in my classroom and I will strive to build respectful positive relationships with every family with the knowledge that connections between school and home increase health and educational outcomes for all students. (APST 4, 5, 7)

I strongly believe in reflection as a tool for both personal and professional growth. As a teacher I will actively seek and engage in professional learning opportunities, continually seek collegial feedback and reflect on my teaching to better my performance and improve my practices for the future. I also seek to lead by example, encouraging my students to engage in self reflection for learning.(APST 6)

I am a team player and believe in the strength of a community. I will therefore have a proactive in building professional relationships with colleagues and community members gaining valuable skills from others and sharing my own skills as part of the whole school community.(APST 7)
